Creation Process

When we started manufacturing the product we contemplated between resin printing and PLA 3d printing. We also thought of the different finishes that we could have for our final product and what the finish could add to the idea of the product. We finally decided on 3D printing all the parts and then spray painting the pieces with a stone finish. We also decided to build the base out of concrete; to add weight. The stone finish coupled with the concrete base is supposed to give an organic feel to the product while giving it a bucolic character that could curiosity about the product's psyche. The concrete base was made by injecting cement into a silicone mold that was made by the negative space of one of the 3D prints of the base

The process of coming up with a form was a back and forth from the digital realm to the physical. We thought of using the Greek goddess as a muse for the product; we attempted at deconstructing the concept of justice into design elements that could be translated into the form/aesthetic of Themis.  We sketched a few iterations till we reached a point where Themis had elements of justice embedded in its form all whilst maintaining ambiguity that stirs curiosity for the object. We were aiming for a form that doesn't say a lot about the function but still nods to its essence in a less literal fashion.

We split the product into four parts: input (listens to get triggered) output (responsible for the randomized reactions), the base which acts as a vessel for a lot of the parts that make up the product, and finally the pipes that connect the base to the other two components. Splitting the products benefitted us in the prototyping phase as it allowed us to prototype smaller parts to kind of puzzle together till we achieved a form that we were satisfied with. We mostly focused on prototyping different kinds of bases and different output/input components.
